For over 40 years, Slacan’s pole line hardware is engineered with Charpy-rated toughness to withstand the challenges of extreme weather. As a trusted name in North America for manufacturing high-quality, reliable, and innovative transmission and distribution hardware, anchoring solutions, and other components for the power industry.

As climate conditions become increasingly unpredictable, the impact on power lines and hardware intensifies. Galloping, shock loads, falling trees, and ice shedding are just a few examples of the threats that can compromise power systems. These failures often lead to costly repairs, power outages, system disruptions, equipment damage, and risks to employee and public safety—all of which can erode customer confidence.

At Slacan, we’ve engineered our products to meet these challenges head-on. Our specialized heat treatment process ensures our hardware remains ductile even at extreme low temperatures, allowing it to bend and deform under stress before failing completely. Tested to meet or exceed industry standards, Slacan hardware is rated for temperatures as low as -45°C (-50°F).

To ensure our products are storm-ready, we utilize the Charpy test, which measures the energy absorbed by a material during sudden impact. This test helps us select the optimal materials for specific applications and environmental conditions. According to the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), there are three Charpy Impact Levels, each tailored for different service temperatures:

  • Charpy Level 1: Minimum requirement of 20 Joules at -20°C (15 ft-lb at 0°F)
  • Charpy Level 1.5: 27 Joules at -30°C (20 ft-lb at -22°F)
  • Charpy Level 2: 50% of the fracture surface remains ductile at -45°C (-50°F)

Given that much of Canada regularly experiences temperatures as low as -30°C, Slacan has adopted a minimum Charpy Level of 1.5 for all transmission products.

Slacan’s heat-treated alloy steel fasteners are designed to deliver the same high Charpy performance as our hardware, ensuring reliability across the entire product. By prioritizing performance under extreme conditions, we’ve set the standard for storm-ready solutions.
